About the 1981 Congress

The Surrey Easter Chess Congress 1981 was held at the Central Library, St Nicholas Way, Sutton, Surrey, over Easter weekend: 17, 18, 19 and 20 April 1981.

The official Surrey County Chess Association prize winners sheet records a large congress, headed by the Frank Winter Memorial Open and the Major Tournament, supported by main and novice sections.

The Open was a 7-round Swiss with 77 competitors. The Major Tournament, for players under 150 grading, was also a 7-round Swiss and attracted 131 competitors.

Historical context

The 1981 congress shows the event already well established after the inaugural Surrey Congress at Coombe Girls School, New Malden, in 1975.
