The Southern Counties Individual Championship title was won by James Cavendish on tie-break. The nomination for a place in the British Championship was awarded to John Nicholson; both James Cavendish and Peter Large were already qualified.
The congress material includes a four-page typescript headed “A selection of games played in the Open Tournament at the Surrey Easter Chess Congress at Sutton, 24th to 27th March 1989”. It states that the games were transcribed as shown on the players’ scoresheets.
For now, the game scores are best preserved as a source scan. They can later be converted into PGN one game at a time and linked to the archive game viewer after checking the moves.
The scan includes games from rounds 3 to 7, including Basman, Cavendish, Large, Nicholson, Upton, Kinsman, Franklin and others. Several games are marked as entries for the best game prize.
